The Interior Design Of The Ascott Marunouchi Hotel In Tokyo – MEC Design International design studio, a member of Mitsubishi Estate Group, worked closely with Mr. Kian Liew, the Ascott’s head of Global ID Management, Product & Technical Services to plan this contemporary design for the property. The project for the Ascott Marunouchi Hotel in Tokyo is running for the Covet International Awards 2018! All of the interior design was inspired by the panoramic views of the city skyline and the dynamic lifestyle that we can see in the capital of Japan!

Akihiko Watanabe and Kian Liew combined forces to create the contemporary interior design project of the citie’s newest luxury residential hotel! Akihiko is the Group Executive Officer MEC Design International that is recognized for their wide‐range services like consultation, design, production, and retail.  Kian Liew is the Head of Global ID for The Ascott Limited and alumni of Chelsea College of Art and Design, in London. With 15 years of experience in the interior design market, Kian is recognized for showcasing some straightforward, elegant, detailed and functional design projects.

Inspired by the synergistic relationship between the rapid pace of modernization and the dignified charm of local culture, the design for this hospitality project combines minimalist principles with luxurious modern trappings. Trees, blossoms, leaves and water elements, that are related to the Japanese philosophy of Zen,
are paired up with linear elements inspired by the local high‐rise architecture.

The union of the venerable philosophy and modern innovation characterizes the design concept of the Ascott
Marunouchi in Tokyo. The residence hotel features hand-made art pieces created by artists from all over the world. From Korea to Brazil, the artistic direction of Ascott Marunouchi reflects the diversity of the cosmopolitan fabric of Tokyo, while simultaneously paying homage to the Japanese minimalist aesthetic.

The perpetual dialogue between Man and Nature was the second source of inspiration for the designers! Deeply ingrained in the local culture, this theme is dedicated to give each guest a true zen yet luxurious experience.  Each floor of the building was designed in a way that could represent the four seasons of the year.  We can find the warm spring season on the 23rd and 24th floors; Summer on the 25th and 26th; Autumn on the 27th and 28th; and Winter on the top floor, like the cherry on top of the cake!

A subtle jasmine and tangerine aroma permeates the air in the entire residence. Each apartment is decorated with a  taupe and cream palette, silk Pierre Frey cushions, contemporary fittings and high‐spec kitchens complete with all that the guest needs for a comfortable stay.

Sebastiaan van Soest is the owner and manager of Goudleeratelier Van Soest and the creator of the gilded leather folding screen that you can see on the pictures. This artistic place that has the purpose of creating an innovative concept into gilded leather art, giving it a modern design and application.

Sebastiaan van Soest is one of the only gilded leather-worker in the Netherlands. The craft was transmitted from father to son so the gilded leather art was a predominant fact in artist childhood.

One of the most important moments of Sebastiaan artistic life was a workshop in the ’90s were his parents created a gilded leather room for a replica of Huis ten Bosch at the Holland Village in Japan. That was the first time that Sebastiaan had contact with the gilded leather manufacture.

This screen has an aluminum frame made by Gardelux and designed by Edward van Vliet. The artist incorporated the pattern of the five senses, similar to the work of Maarten van de Heuvel in 1640. The gilded leather is not worked with gold leaf but rather with layers of silver leaf.

The folding screen has 240 cm of height, 60 cm of width and 15 cm of depth. Layers of varnish are applied so that the silver doesn’t oxidize and keeps it a shiny golden color. This meticulous technique of decorating leather dates back to the 6th century.

Gilded leather can be applied to numerous objects such as bags, chairs, and screens. A bag alone can take more than 50 hours of work to complete. Sebastiaan purpose is to preserve the gilded leather craft as well as to restore gilded leather pieces!
